! My Br BEN VALDKZ Bead That roty cloud yam let hanging over the hills to . the cut coveti the town of . Mill City, whose citizen Jour neyed to Bend over the week end to iee their boyi win the Oregon State Softball title. In a doubleheader, tram planted because of rain at Mill City, the Kelly Lumber men defeated the long time tournament veteran, - Bull Willis, In the second same o the doubleheader after Willis hid shut them out on five hits in the opener. - After defeating John Pear son on two unearned runs in the first fame, Willis found the "Iron man" stunt too much for bim and went down to his second defeat In the tourna ment in the ninth Inning. He seemed to have the Mill City men eating out of his hand until lightning struck .In the bottom of the ninth. Ben nett and Cole were quick outs, both popping out to the first baseman. Then Don- Carey got hold of a Willis fast ball and shot it on a line into left field. Cect Berg, Rube left fielder, got too anxious snd the ball went through htm for triple. . Gordie (Cultch) McMorris promptly smashed a ground ball behind second bate which Bill Hutchison fielded but couldn't make a play on and that was the ball game. Mill City had not really threatened In the scond game and the end was almost as surprising as it was quick. Eu gene, on the other hand, had Ron Davidson in trouble most of the way, but he always managed to pitch himself out of trouble. Tha biggest threat tame in the seventh Inning when the two leadoff batters both singled to start the in ning but failed to score due largely to a quick double play by third baseman Al Zuber on Bull Willis' line out, as Rsnnje Smith was trapped off third and couldn't get bsck in time. f - Although they committed three errors in the second gt.ie to four In the first, the Kellymen always jot tough when a serious threat devel oped. Top defense men of the afternoon was centerfield cr, Manager Charlie Mlckel son of Eugene who camped under one long Kelly drive after another to win himself the award of number one nui sance to the Kelly hopes. ' In the first game, center- fielder John Hoffert of Mill City executed a rare unassist ed double play when he caught Bob WeUells texas leaguer be' hind second base and rambled on into second to double catcher Harry Walker who still doesn't believe that any outfielder in the game could get to the ball, Plaudits to all the Kellymen for their fine exhibition in the tourney, but especially to shortstop Gordie McMorris whose brilliant defensive play and clutch hitting made their infield a pitcher's dream. Both the Kellymen and the Eugene Rubes landed tin men on tha mythical "all-State" team along with represents' tive from Grants Pass and Cor- vallis. Tha outstanding pitcher award went to John Pearson ot Mill City who threw the tour naemnta only no-hltter, that a 1-0 jewel over Grants Pass and Vera Collins. The outstanding hitter award went to Manager Bunco Chapman of Grants Pass who nosed out Manager Lou Stagg of Corvallia ,400 to .385. Outstanding player of the tournaent, due to his great centerfielding, managing, and hitting was Charlie Mickelson of Eugene. The rest of the team: First base. Don Carty of Mill City; second base. Bill Hutchison of Eugene third base. Sim Chapman of Grants Pass Shortstop, Gordie McMorris of Mill City: leftfield. John Hof fert ot Mill City; Centerfield, Charlie Mickelson .of Eugene; rightfield. Bob Wren of Eu- . gene; utility outfielder, Carl Gustafson of Corvallis; utility infielder. Mathews Only One Home Run Behind Babe Ruth's Pace By CARL LUNDQTJIST New York (UJ? Fans wbe still think tha Braves have a chance to win the pennant are harder to find than PM Beta Kappa key in a hock shop, but the Milwaukee madcaps may coma up with consolation prise if Ed Mathews wins the home run championship. Mathews, who would be a cinch to be baseball's "sopho more of the year ' if there were such an award, might even win the most valuable player tro phy if he keep slugging the way he has been doing lately. Once again today he was only one homer behind Babe Ruth's record of 1927 after pac' ing the Braves to a 19-4 and 11-5 triumphs at Pittsburgh, Mathews hit three homers in the two games to give him a total of 43 for the season. Six en Top That put him six ahead of his closest competitor in the Ma jprs, Ted Kluszewskl of Cin cinnati, whp has 37. wnen the Braves came through with four more hom ers in the second game they cracked another National League mark ot 10 homers in two consecutive games act by the Pirates of 1825. The Braves picked up a half game over the Dodgers and now trail them by 10 games even though Brooklyn poured across 13 rune In a hilarious seventh inning and went on to beat tha Cardinals, 20-4, with 19 hits and eight walks. ' The Yankees stayed eight games ahead of the White Sox, beating them 10-8 as Gil Mc Dougald, Joe Collins, and Yogi Berra hit homers, but lost the second game 1-0 when Billy Pierce pitched a four-bitter for his 17th victory and his sev enth shutout Other Games The Indians, who are coming on nicely now when it really doesn't oihtter any more, top ped the Red Sox 9-3 and 1-4. Ted Williams hit a towering 400-foot Boston homer in the first game and Sammy White also got one In losing cause, Phil Cavarettas three-run pinch double gave the Cubs a 6-2 second game victory after the Giants won the opener 10-1 on homers by Al Dark, Wes Westrum, Bobby Thomson and Darvl Srjencer and stesdy pitching by Jim Hesrn. Karl Drews pitched six-hit ball for the Phils to beat Cincinnati 4-2 and Smokey Burgess hit a ninth inning second game horn' er to make it a sweep 4-3 as Jim Konstanty gained his 14th win.
